‘Gorpcore’ Is The brand new ‘Normcore’ And It’s Bringing Bum Bags Back
Bumbags are back.
Gone are the days once they were the only preserve of creepy old uncles and badly dressed tourists.
These days, fanny packs are being worn by rappers. By models. And soon, little question, by you.
Why Because gorpcore has stone island summer coat introduced them back into fashion.
However what the hell is ‘gorpcore’
It gets its name from ‘GORP’, an acronym of the ‘Good Old Raisins and Peanuts’ mix used by hikers.
The Cut coined the phrase as a vogue time period for dressing such as you spend a load of your time outdoors or camping.
You know the sort we’re speaking about: people who insist on wearing North Face in Islington. Ironic fleeces. BUM Bags.
‘The look isn’t quite the “camping chic” that designers comparable to Givenchy, Lanvin, and — most notably — Prada sent down the runway,’ explains The Cut’s Jason Chen.
‘It’s not about a hyper-elevated, excessive-style take on hiking clothes. Much of it is moderately defiantly ugly, like something you’d buy (or exactly what you’d buy) at REI before a weekend in Phoenicia — practical, ingredient-braving fleeces, ponchos, parkas, and windbreakers from no-nonsense manufacturers like Patagonia, the North Face, Teva, Columbia, and Birkenstock worn with painter pants, Vans, Hawaiian shirts, Dickies.
‘Head-to-toe outdoor-wear would be too literal — it has to be thrown off to communicate the wearer is in on the joke. The outfit isn’t designer, but it’s vogue, in the way in which that any aesthetic executed with intentionality — ever insistent and dissonant — can turn out to be “a look.”’
Fashion icons embody A$AP Rocky, who rocked up to Style Week in a Calvin Klein fleece, puffer and Balenciaga bum bag, and Drake – a former icon of normcore and who loves nothing higher than performing in Stone Island windbreakers.
Whereas normcore saw us all dressing like 90s mums in high waisted over-washed jeans and comfy jumpers, this development sees us in search of performance-enduring style.
You could possibly put on your Stone Island jacket to the pub, to a football match or on a hiking journey.
These brands don’t come cheap but they’re durable. And that’s the message you’re promoting.

And since you’re so damn practical, you don’t have time to be faffing around with handbags. No, you need a fanny pack.
