“That’s a long way off. Now you listen to me fastidiously – as long as you’re a naval officer and he is a sailor within the navy – you are not to fulfill him or maintain contact with him in any manner – you might be not to have any sort of relationship or friendship with him – is that clear… ” the Commodore says firmly.
“Sir – Please Sir – he is more than a friend – we are considering of getting married,” the lady naval officer says.
“You need to get married to a sailor… Are you Stone Island Jumpers bloody crazy… I hope he is just not screwing you – that’s the last bloody thing we want – officers and sailors fornicating with each other…!” the Commodore yells.

“Sir – however what mistaken have we performed… We’re simply in love with one another. And please inform me what’s his fault… Is it his fault that he’s a sailor and he’s love with me who’s an officer… Sir – I don’t need you to hurt him in any means…” the lady naval officer pleads.
“You are asking me what mistaken you’ve carried out… I informed you, didn’t I You might be an Officer. He is a Sailor. And – an Officer can’t fall in love with a Sailor – that’s what’s mistaken. You’re each are responsible of fraternization – so we are going to charge you both – and both of you might be more likely to face court docket-martial…” the Commodore warns the lady officer.
“Court-martial… Sir – please don’t say such issues. You’re speaking as if we’ve damaged the regulation – as if we’ve got dedicated some grave offence…” the lady naval officer says, trembling with trepidation.
“Sir – please tell me. How is our conduct prejudicial to good order and naval self-discipline You need to cost us with breaking self-discipline simply because we went out collectively on a date… ”
“There isn’t any private life when you be part of the navy. You better fall in line and behave your self – or you each might be charged and punished – and – as for you there may be yet another factor…” the Commodore says.
“What, Sir ” the lady naval officer says.
“Since you might be an officer – you’ll be additionally charged with scandalous conduct unbecoming the character of an officer.”
“Scandalous… Conduct unbecoming the character of an officer… ” the lady naval officer asks, bewildered.
“Yes – conduct unbecoming of an officer. That’s part fifty four (2) of the Navy Act – go and test it up. I instructed you we are going to throw the guide at you in the event you don’t behave your self…” the Commodore says, trying the Lady Lieutenant in the attention.
The younger lady naval officer – the Lady Lieutenant – appears as if she goes to interrupt down with concern.
Then – the Commodore seems on the Schoolie Commander (Ed) – and the Commodore shouts on the Schoolie Commander: “As for you – in case you don’t cease her from continuing this nonsense – we are going to cost you with abetment of all of the offences she is committing – and you may say goodbye to your profession.”
“Abetment… ” the flabbergasted Schoolie Commander (Ed) asks.
“Go and browse Section 76 of the stone island junior london Navy Act,” the Commodore says to the Schoolie Commander (Ed).
The Schoolie Commander starts trembling – and he mumbles, “Yes, Sir.”
The Commodore warns the Schoolie Commander, “I assure you that if this hanky-panky doesn’t cease instantly – all of you’ll be in massive trouble – you – Commander (Ed) – the sailor boyfriend – and particularly you, younger lady,” the Commodore says – turning to the younger lady naval officer.
The Commodore seems on the Lady Lieutenant and repeats his final phrases: “Yes – especially you, Lieutenant – you’ll be in actual deep trouble – they might even throw you out of the Navy – dismissed with disgrace…”
Whereas the Commodore commanding the stone frigate is studying the riot act to the younger lady naval officer – the Captain of the frigate (the ship on which the younger woman’s lover, the Chief Petty Officer, is borne) is performing with velocity and dispatch.
Yes – the Captain of the ship is taking swift motion on the Lady Lieutenant’s boyfriend – her “lover boy” sailor.
Earlier than he realizes what is happening – the hapless sailor is immediately transferred to a ship headed east – to be dropped off to his new obligation station on a distant desolate island in the course of the sea.
Subsequent morning – the younger lady naval officer is sitting in a prepare – on her technique to take up her new appointment because the Schooling Officer of a small naval base in a distant place within the “back of beyond”.
The “powers-that-be” hope that distance will make the ardour of the lovers cool off.
As they are saying: … “out of sight” – “out of mind” …
In true navy type – an ungainly drawback has been neatly solved.
A scandalous liaison has been terminated.
Navy customs and traditions have been upheld.
Because the dashing prepare heads in the direction of her new vacation spot – the Lady Lieutenant yearns for her boyfriend – sure – naval officers have “hearts” too.
As her coronary heart aches for her “lover boy” sailor – the heartbroken younger lady naval officer remembers the consoling phrases of her ex-boss, the Schoolie Commander, who had come to see her off on the railway station: “The Navy is a System – and it’s best to by no means combat in opposition to the system – as a result of the system at all times wins…!”
“Fraternization” is a uniquely navy idea.
“Fraternization” is the time period historically used to establish private relationships that contravene the customary bounds of acceptable senior-subordinate relationships.
Within the Defence Companies – “Fraternization” is prohibited as a result of it is taken into account to be prejudicial to good order and self-discipline.
Any “unduly acquainted relationship” between a senior and a junior is deemed to be fraternization.
Marriage (which incorporates intimate sexual relationship) is an “unduly acquainted relationship”.
Many different relationships like relationship, residing collectively and different intimate friendships will also be deemed to be “unduly acquainted relationships”.
Strictly talking – prohibition of Fraternization ought to apply to all Navy Personnel – each to Officers and to PBOR (Personnel Beneath Officer Rank which comprise all Troopers, Sailors and Airmen).
Nevertheless – within the Indian Armed Forces – loads of leniency is proven so far as relationships between senior male officers and junior feminine officers are involved (regardless of their distinction in rank).
Many male officers have “unduly acquainted relationships” with feminine officers (marriage).
Is this not “fraternization”
Strictly speaking – it is fraternization.
Nonetheless – in follow it’s not handled as “fraternization”.
The truth is – “brother officers” are permitted to marry “sister officers” – sure – male officers are allowed to marry feminine officers.
There are numerous “in-service couples” within the Armed Forces – and this pattern of DIFC (Double Revenue Fauji Couples) is rising in all of the three Defence Providers.
Somebody even stated that the Military, Navy and Air Power encourage marriages between uniformed “Fauji” officers by providing numerous sops like frequent postings (spouse postings) and dual accommodation seniority carry ahead and so on.
This encouragement to “marriage in uniform” is obvious should you observe the growing variety of marriages between male officers and female officers in the uniformed companies.
Does this not go in opposition to the tenets of “fraternization”
Suppose – within the Navy – a male Commander marries a feminine Lieutenant – or – within the Military – a male Lieutenant Colonel marries a feminine Captain – or – within the Air Drive – a male Squadron Leader marries a feminine Flight Lieutenant – is it not a case of “fraternization”…
Surprisingly – marriages and intimate relationships between two officers should not thought of “fraternization” within the Indian Armed Forces.
It’s okay for a male officer to have an “unduly acquainted relationship” (marriage) with a female officer – regardless of their distinction in seniority.
But – what is going to happen if a feminine defence officer desires to marry a male soldier, sailor or airman…
It might occur – anybody can fall in love with anybody.
Will the armed forces enable officers to marry troopers, sailors or airmen
For instance – will the Military enable a female Main to marry a male JCO…
Like within the story above – will the Navy enable a female Lieutenant to marry a male Chief Petty Officer…
If officers can marry, date, romance or have relationships with different officers – then why prohibit relationships between officers and PBOR (Personnel Under Officer Rank)…
Strictly talking – fraternization consists of officer-officer relationships as nicely – and may apply to intimate/romantic relationships between two officers of varying seniority.
Nevertheless – it seems that the definition of “fraternization” has been tweaked to use solely to relationships between officers and PBOR (troopers, sailors, airmen).
Such Officer/PBOR relationships are thought of taboo – whereas relationships and marriages between senior officers and junior officers is considered okay
As society turns into more fashionable and progressive – issues could change.
It’s possible you’ll say that’s is a colonial legacy of the “Raj” – however – at current – the “class system” continues to be prevalent in India – each within the Defence Services” – and even in the Civilian Bureaucracy.
All over the place ” there are two courses – Officers and Non-Officers.
Coming again to life in army uniform – will class obstacles ever break down – no less than so far as “fraternization” is anxious
Perhaps – it should happen sometime in the close to future.
Till then – “fauji” love stories that cross the “class barrier” can have unhappy endings – just like the story of the sick-fated “Lovers in Uniform”. In case you share this publish, please give due credit to the creator Vikram Karve
