Always Christmas of Canterbury Village in Michigan
Updated on November 22, 2016 Amanda moreAmanda lives and explores in southeastern Michigan. She knows the fun these little towns and lesser known cities have to offer!
For 20+ years “Always Christmas” has been a destination spot for travelers and holiday buyers 12 months-round. Opened in 1993, the Aldridge family launched this Yuletide-themed store as part of Olde World Canterbury Village in Lake Orion (or more accurately, Orion Township), Michigan. At 90,000 square ft, the holiday cheer was sprawling. Sadly the 2013 season was the last for Aldridge’s All the time Christmas to be seen at such great dimension and beauty.
But it is not closed! Contrary to common town belief, the Lake Orion Christmas store did not go out of business – or even move. Well, not out of Canterbury Village anyway. It’s just a tad smaller now, after the big building was bought to Woodside Bible Church in 2014 and the Christmas enterprise was unfold out to smaller shops within the same site location.
However to recollect or glimpse the “outdated” (or should that be “olde” ) Aldridge’s All the time Christmas of Canterbury Village, continue scrolling all the way down to what once was!
Do you enjoy Christmas shops yr-spherical
While almost everyone in Michigan has heard of the world’s largest Christmas store out in Frankenmuth (aka Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland), All the time Christmas was ‘always’ a bit of a secret kept by its nearby towns. Located in Canterbury Village (and throughout the vacation season the whole Olde World village is decked out in shows of Santa and nativities) and positioned off a quiet stretch of Joslyn Highway, the store acquired good site visitors 12 months-round but prepared for a crowd in the course of the months of November and December.
Whether you were searching for low-cost ornaments, distinctive decorations, inspiration, or just a ‘free’ Christmas exercise for the family this vacation haven equipped it. I communicate from expertise and fond childhood recollections after i state that you could possibly literally spend hours wandering the stretches of multiple floors in All the time Christmas and still come throughout beforehand unnoticed offers or decor.
No entry charge and tons to have a look at saved adults and kids busy and in a merry mood because of sparkling lights and bulbs, a giant snow castle, life-size reindeer, full-size Christmas bushes, and (after all) a continuing loop of Christmas carols Stone Island Outlet and hymns. The only price came from any purchases you chose to make.
If you happen to chose to take the primary entrance into Always Christmas, you walked up huge stairs painted festive pink and inexperienced with lights lining the steps for nighttime. Upon coming into you had been greeted by a 5-foot Santa Claus. Then step by the final door and it instantly became Christmas, no matter what the month.
The opposite way to enter took you thru thick, old style double doors; then previous a knight in shining armor, right to the front of a towering blue and white Christmas castle that stretched to the height of the second floor and appeared to come right out of a fairy tale.
Of course cash registers have been located next to both of these entrance/exits!
How do You feel about Always Christmas downsizing
It’s still great!
Even better now!
I miss the old store…
Eh. I don’t care.

Whereas it is certainly true that any long-lasting retailer sells a product persons are interested in buying, I really feel what drew me to go to At all times Christmas every year was that while the for-sale items have been often fun to look at on their own, the place was also covered floor-to-ceiling (including ON the ceiling) in Christmas beauty and silliness just for the joy of looking at it.
For instance, large plastic ornaments dangled over your head. All across the tops of the partitions on the main level ran shelves playing home to everything from full-measurement reindeer to polar bears to Eskimos to Huskies pulling sleds. Knights in shining armor have been current to ‘guard’ varied halls and doorways of castle stone and antique wooden.
Then there was the aforementioned impressive Christmas Castle. It glittered white and blue and reached up into the ‘sky’, or by the open space left by a circular balcony design on the principle ground for individuals to look down upon stated castle. It probably goes with out saying that this space of the shop was a child magnet.
Trees of every color gave light out of corners and at one point filled a sub-floor with a mini forest of Christmas timber starting from small to common to you-would-want-a-mansion sized. You possibly can discover conventional green or snow-brushed or go a bit different with purple and pink.
Department 56 Displays
Again on the primary ground there was a whole room devoted to Division fifty six Villages, all laid out beautifully on platforms so that you can take as much time as you appreciated noticing the little details. Steps of ice were from Styrofoam for the little villagers and backdrops displayed mountains or city skylines for each town.
You can check out the Department 56 Dickens’ Village, Christmas in the city, the town of A Christmas Story, or the original Snow Village. Pieces had been normally all the time activated, allowing the animation and lights to carry a sense of life to them.
Always Christmas also has a fantastic Halloween Department 56 village! It was originally tucked into a corner of its own among all the crimson and green, and its design was just as elaborate as all the rest.
Briefly mentioned above, there was (and is) a fine line between merchandise and for-fun decoration in All the time Christmas. Many displays are carefully designed to entice you into a purchase, as in any shop. If perhaps there was all the time more detail in a D56 village layout than your average grocery store endcap, that was the nature of Christmas product: shiny or sparkly, old-fashioned or modern, cute or quirky, subtle or gorgeous – they need to stand out. Into your head went thoughts of how great holiday themed miniature buildings and folks would look in your residing room or the way in which your Christmas tree would glitter with that specific bulb.
So yes, you could buy nearly every Department 56 piece on display (though not the display pieces themselves, generally). The lovingly constructed up nativity scenes were all elements of collections stored in boxes simply awaiting your wallet. And of course every plastic Christmas tree had a price tag connected.
Nearly all of the Always Christmas store consisted of ornaments for sale, nonetheless. They were in every single place, in every room, decking the walls and filling cartons and tabletops and shelves. They stone island hoodie replica truly had something for everybody. Styles that had been traditional, sports themed, Michigan pride, heritage-targeted, woodsy and nature loving, and so forth. Materials may be glass or plastic, glitter or beads.
And the just plain odd might never be forgotten. Always Christmas gained something of a reputation in the late 2000’s for being the place to go if you happen to have been in want of an entry for an “Ugliest Christmas Ornament” contest! Who could blame them Amongst all that beauty there were several truly… shall we say unique styles After all, it’s not everyone in the country who thinks shining fish heads belong on Christmas trees…
While ultimately Aldridge’s At all times Christmas is and always has been a retailer, putting them in the business of selling product, they sometimes offered things to do apart from shop.
During the months of November and December youngsters might come sit on Santa’s lap as he took up residence outside the beloved snow castle. Likewise, couches or simply the floor were a fantastic place for kids to sit and watch a quick animatronic puppet present that includes Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs putting on slightly song and dance while friendly woodland critters looked on.
Or, adults might sign up for group lessons and workshops in building Department 56 displays, lead and taught by the designer of the store’s very own dioramas.
There is no place like dwelling for the holidays…
It was a sad day for me when i learned the Always Christmas store I’d loved so much as a child and now (as an adult) wasted many a December hour in would not be. A smaller version, spread throughout multiple buildings, just didn’t seem quite the same. I still find joy in what’s left, but every now and then I like to remember the Always Christmas that was. I hope you do too!

I love your article and now I’m impressed to share extra of my journey to NYC last week. The tree at Rockerfeller Center was magnificent as ever and Macy’s was enjoyable as always. I noticed there were fewer decorations (everyone has to cut costs somewhere) but they’ve really improved on customer service over the last few years … so anybody who can go to should, i.e. NYC is only 5 hrs for me and Michigan … quite a bit additional.
Merry Christmas to all!
Thanks for reading, the congrats, and the comment 😀
