Unit: 518th Signal Co / 459 Signal Battalion
MOS 26L10 worked the Phu Cat site and Nha Trang site. Spent a lot of nights in the Rain Bow Club.

Wounded August 7 1969 VC attack on Nha Trang Company / Battalion area. I was hit with the same round that Grahm lost his leg, I'm the lucky one. Norman Provost was also wounded along with others sorry I have forgotten names. Steve Peel was killed. Tom Ransome received Bronze Star for actions that night. I was shipped to hospital in Japan and than Walson Army hospital at Ft Dix NJ. I would like to get a copy of the after action report if anyone knows how or where to find them. My apologies for any name misspelling.

Served in HQ Co. 69th signal batt. 1st Sig Brgd, June of 67-68. Fought at the end of the air strip (A-1 Sky Raider shot down right over our heads, crash landing thru the barbed wire behind us). In an old concrete French fort with defunk tank turret installed. Close to Cholon when it was chewed down to rubble. Remember the sniper in the adjacent Doppler Tower. Before that I was a draftsman in the supply room. I remember WO Sas, Lt Graham, sp4s Skip Loomis, Larry Engle, Dake Kronenburg, 2 black fellows- Hermon Pardon (arms room from alambama & EL (last name only, miss you buddy). A Gene Dehart from South Carolina, Ken Barry from California. Griffin, (last name only). Mail room Harry. Our Korean water generator operator Sing Song U. And one small mutiny just prior to the Tet attack. "Good morning Vietnam" & "It's only a thing!"  Would love to hear from anyone.

I am trying to find out why the uniqueness of Russell Major Relay. The early part of 1971 I went to work at Russell Major Relay, RHMLBHA, at Long Binh, RVN. Russell Major Relay was a hybrid of the modern, at that time and the past. It was a dual access AUTODIN trib station, homed off both Korat and Clark AFB ASC's. The past was the old Teletype (TTY) torn tape Relay Banks we had to a bunch of different communications center's throughout Vietnam. We had around 25 of these old TTY relay banks giving us the capability of having 50 different TTY circuits. As I remember, only around 30 were actually in use. My question has always been why a hybrid dual access trib station/torn tape relay? I assumed it was because both the Phu Lam and the Nha Trang ASC's were closing down and our TTY relay banks were there to take care of the smaller communications centers in RVN until they closed due to the troop withdrawal. The bigger commcenters were being re homed off Nha Trang and Phu Lam to either Korat or Clark ASC's or both as was the case with Russell plus Danang, MACV and TSN TCC's. Was Russell as unique as I think it was and why a torn tape relay inside a dual access trib station, was my assumption correct?

When I was in Vietnam, I was a member of the Area Communications Company and then the Command Communications Company on Long Binh, part of the 1st Signal Bde. In November of 1972, Long Binh was transferred to the ARVN and we, the last U.S. troops on Long Binh left. I was transferred to Saigon and went to work in the MACV TCC. I was assigned to TCF 39th Signal Bn, USASTRATCOM-SEA. We still wore the 1st Signal Bde patch. Was USASTRATCOM-SEA the new name for 1st Signal or was it part of 1st Signal or had 1st Signal been deactivated at the time Long Binh was turned over to the ARVN?

During my tour with HHC, 369th Signal Battalion, Vung Tau, from January to October 1970, our battalion commander was LTC Harvey T. Also, anyone from the Battalion personnel shop or our wonderful company clerk, SP4 Arthur Tachikawa - the only guy I ever met who ate Dog Biscuits on purpose - and got me to eat one, too.  ;}  I wish all of the veterans only the best.  God bless you guys from our Vietnam days - your friend, John Harrison.

Hi Gentlemen: First may I say THANK YOU for your many sacrifices and God Bless you all, If I had been around then I would have kissed and hugged you all when your planes landed back state side! Your true Heros to patriots everywhere! My Dad, Joe Rushlow (E4 I believe) was in country 67-68 at VC Hill Vung Tau. (commspec USASTRATCOM and spec 5 at discharge agian I think. I don't have his dd form hany at the moment!) I know he was 1st Sig BGD but the rest is fuzzy for him. Apparently he was part of a long lines detatchment with about 30 other guys. I have a few good pics I will try to get up soon, a pic of him during a mortor attack was also featured in the 1987 Hustler article "Last Will and Testamate" By Paul D Shiplett, I dont know if I can post that or not . He and I have many questions and he is now wanting to talk much more about the era but is losing names and such to time. His unit wore a white and red "Road Runner" patch as well as the 1st Sig patch. Which I still have on his flack jacket so I can scan it as well. He also recieved a zippo with the giant antenna in white and the hill i think was in red and black outline. (It was lost in a fire back here.) They also had a dog they adopted for a while they named after a whiskey I think. It is escaping me at the moment but it was a small dog. Dad has no ambition to get any paper work besides the one I have so I figured this way may be helpful. He served from I think July 67 to Jan 68, when he left country he went to Hagerstown Maryland for 30 day leave and then to the Pentagon for a short while before his discharge. (Honorable)  Also did a short stint in Germany I think before Vietnam. He would like more info and memories and I think validation about this unit since there is no info to be found any where on it. I am sorry for the book but it would mean a lot if anyone has any info. Again God Bless You all.

1967-1969 I was a member of the 105th Signal Detachment and 334th Signal Company in Bangkok. We fell under the 29th Signal Group which was under the 1st Signal Bde. We did not wear the 1st Signal Patch, but the 29th Signal Group Patch. Does anyone remember the patch.  I have done a search, but can not locate one that looks familar.

Bill, good to see you are posting. I don't check here a lot, but did have something I wanted to ask of the group, and what a coincidence, your post and an earlier post from John Thoma.
For the group, I was with RCG from Aug 69 to Jun 71.
I've been an Active Reservist for far too many years, and I've proudly worn the 1st Sig Bde patch as a combat patch from my early days in the Reserve program (1973) until my last AT, in November, 2007. I will be retiring from the Reserve program in May, 2008, mandatory retirement.
So, here is the question. Am I probably the last person in uniform, either Reserve or active, to wear the 1st Sig Bde patch as a Vietnam unit combat patch?
